According to me Borat is way above any yardsticks in comedy and gives birth to a new genre of humor; intelligent nonsensical comedy. Classic comedies make you smile and feel good but this one movie that will make laugh…..laugh……and laugh hard. I must have watched it at least 50 times. Every time I watch it, there is something new I discover. This movie is a great stress buster and I guaran-damn-tee that you will never get bored by watching it over and over again.
I have seen creativity in movies coming in the form of sci-fi, drama, romance genre mostly. But, here is one movie that displays creativity in nonsense; a rare phenomenon. There is a large group of non-sense movies like the Scary Movie series or American pie or Hot Shots but those movies don’t have it ….what is the word…..oh yes!!! “Heart”. Sacha Baron Cohen has brought the character to life. I must admit that I did pause and think; hey is there anyone I know from my friends and relatives who is close to this character….and guess what; I did find one..psstttttt
Borat is a very innocent character; yet outspoken. This is evident from the very first dialogue he utters “Jak sie masz? My name-a Borat. I like you. I like sex. Is nice!” He means no harm to anybody or anything and his dialogues are something that will make us ‘chauvinist pigs’ relate to. You don’t agree? Screw you perverts; go back and flashback your thoughts and fantasies.
Lets get back to Borat.
Sacha Baron Cohen, a British comedian has portrayed three fictional unorthodox characters on UK television: Ali G, Borat and Bruno. Yes!!! Borat did exist even before the movie was released in 2006. Borat Sagdiyev is a television personality from Kazakhstan. He is always seen praising his country and makes you laugh because of his own inference of things. He is most of the times seen making fun of Jews (guess what..Sacha is born in a Jewish family!!!). “Although Kazakhstan a Glorious Country, It Have a Problem, Too: Economic, Social, and Jew” remarks Borat.
In the movie Borat goes to the “US and A” to make a documentary film for the Kazakh information ministry.
He is accompanied by his producer Azamat Bagatov; a fat guy….actually a fat-ass guy. Ha ha ha…..watch the movie and you will know how fat he really is. Anyways; initially the movie looks like a documentary (or mockumentary as many call it) with Borat interviewing or I would say messing around with the people in New-York. One day in the hotel room he accidentally switches his TV to a channel airing “Baywatch” and instantly falls in love with C.J. “Pamela Anderson”. Borat explains “This C.J. was like no Kazakh woman I have ever seen. She had golden hairs, teeth as white as pearls, and the asshole of a seven-year-old. For the first time in my lifes, I was in love.” This is utter nonsense but for a character that is outspoken about his feelings, the word pervert holds no meaning.
And then starts the crazy journey of Borat from NY to California; where C.J. is living.
There are twists and turns in the journey and loads of laughs. Dialogues and scenes that seem totally nonsensical will be a treat to watch. From the scene of the gay parade to the scene with the African Americans to the hotel naked scene to the Pamela Anderson kidnap scene everything is fantastic.
The movie is challengingly fresh and witty and something you would always want to talk to your friends about. I do so all the time….High five!!!
One of my favorite scenes is the one where Borat talks to a person about the Parade (he has no idea that it is a Gay parade) and that these were the best people because they treat him good and accompanied him home. When the person tells him that this was a Gay Parade he exclaims “You telling me the man who try to put a rubber fist in my anus was a homosexual?”
Clearly, If you like dark humor this is ecstasy.
Watch this movie; and see the world from Borat’s eyes. It is really different.
